Top Tips for Walking Your Cat Safely
Did you know that cats can be trained to walk on a lead? It might sound surprising, but leash walking is a wonderful way to give your indoor cat safe access to the outdoors — and it's becoming increasingly popular among cat owners!
Here's everything you need to know to get started.
Why Walk Your Cat? Indoor cats can sometimes become bored or understimulated, which can lead to behavioural issues. Supervised outdoor time gives them the chance to explore new sights, sounds, and smells — providing incredible mental enrichment that keeps them happy and healthy.
Start with the Right Harness Never attach a lead directly to your cat's collar — this can cause injury if they pull or bolt suddenly. Always use a well-fitted harness designed specifically for cats. Look for one that's lightweight, adjustable, and escape-proof. A harness that fits snugly (but not too tightly — you should be able to slip two fingers underneath) is essential for safety.
Introduce the Harness Slowly Don't rush this step! Let your cat sniff and investigate the harness before you try to put it on. Place it near their bed or feeding area so they associate it with positive things. Once they're comfortable, try putting it on for short periods indoors before venturing outside.
Choose the Right Lead A lightweight lead of around 1.2 to 1.8 metres gives your cat enough freedom to explore while keeping them safely under control. Avoid retractable leads for cats — they can be difficult to control quickly if needed.
Pick the Right Time and Place Start in a quiet, familiar outdoor space — your garden is ideal. Avoid busy roads, loud noises, and other animals until your cat is fully comfortable. Early mornings or evenings tend to be quieter and cooler, which most cats prefer.
Let Your Cat Lead Unlike dogs, cats don't walk to heel! Follow your cat's lead and let them set the pace. The goal is exploration, not exercise — so be patient and enjoy the adventure together.
Know When to Stop If your cat shows signs of stress — flattened ears, a low crouching posture, or trying to hide — end the session calmly and head back inside. Always end on a positive note with a treat and some fuss.
